About
So, here's the thing about Here's The Thing (Today.) It started in writer Mieke Eerkens' mind as she walked through a busy downtown of a major city, in a place where real estate comes at a nearly unattainable cost for new business owners. She indulged in the fantasy of a brick and mortar "store" in the tiniest of commercial spaces in a city, a space that nobody would want to rent. A closet with a window. The store would sell only one exquisite thing per month, a beautiful item curated by the owner. It would sit on a velvet pillow in the display window. Passersby would be drawn to the thing and its beauty. Eventually they would anticipate the month's thing, walking by that store intentionally. "What is the thing this month?" they would ask themselves. The store would be called "Here's The Thing."
Because Mieke is a writer devoted to writing, and not (yet) the owner of such a brick and mortar retail store, she decided to launch a virtual store featuring things she loves. And because she doesn't have to deal with inventory that way, she can feature one thing every day instead of every month, working together with the creators of the things. Thus was born Here's the Thing...Today. Also, the online space allowed her idea to expand to include some creative writing, a light vignette of prose inspired by the thing that day. The hope is that readers will come to anticipate this little daily nugget of love every day, regardless of what the thing is. The goal is for visitors to savor a mindful experience of "shopping," whether they buy something or not. Mieke likes to call this mission "slow commerce."
